Finance & Control (international), previously International Financial Management, trains you to become a financial professional who understands that a specific approach is needed in every country.

Your employer wants to set up a production facility in Taiwan. It is your task to calculate future revenues, production costs and the net present value of the project.

Or, your company wants to take over one of its competitors and it's your task to determine the value of this company. As an international financial specialist, you know how to create profitability, take investment decisions, apply risk management and present a business or export plan.

You are an ambitious student with good analytical and numerical skills. You want to start a career in an international financial environment, inside or outside the Netherlands. You like working with different nationalities and speak and write business English fluently.

You will acquire knowledge about finance, accounting and management. You will work in small groups on international business assignments. Your lecturer is your coach. You will spend 6 to 18 months abroad for an internship or exchange. Upon graduation you will be granted the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Programme structure

Study programme

A financial business professional has different roles, such as financial analyst, financial consultant or financial administrator. From day one, you will take on these different roles of the financial business professional during projects. You need to apply the theory you learn in class directly in order to deliver a successful project.

Year 1

Foundation year

In the foundation year, you acquire the basic knowledge needed for your subsequent studies. The first year consists of 4 10-week blocks. In addition to the group project you work on, you attend classes. Courses are centred around finance, accounting, management accounting, corporate culture and international business. You take English classes and practise your digital skills. Every year you can obtain 60 ECTS credits. In the first year you must obtain 52 ECTS to be able to continue to year 2.

Year 2

In-depth knowledge

In years 2-4, you gain in-depth knowledge of finance and control. In year 2 you will do a 5-month placement in an international organisation.

Year 3

In year 3 you will study at a partner university for 5 months.

Year 4

Graduation project in an international organisation

At the end of year 4, you will individually carry out a graduation project in an international organisation, working on advice or improvement ideas. Provided you spend 5 months outside the Netherlands you are free to decide where you want to train or study abroad.

Prior education

The level of your prior education has to be equivalent to the Dutch havo, vwo or mbo 4 level. English must have been one of your courses. If your prior education is equivalent to the Dutch havo, you should have graduated in mathematics and accounting or economics. If we are not familiar with your foreign diploma, NUFFIC, the Dutch organisation for international recognition of diploma, will check the level for us.

Please note: the mentioned deadlines are advised deadlines. When you meet them you give Avans enough time to process your application and, if applicable, apply for a visa. The formal deadline for students with a non-Dutch diploma is 31 August. Applicants with a Dutch diploma must have applied by the 1st of June.

Which of these 3 fees applies to you depends on the category you are in. In general, students from the European Economic Area (EEA) pay the statutory fee, while other students pay the institutional or non-EEA fee. Exchange students generally pay their tuition fees to their home institution and not to Avans.

Due to the coronavirus measures, students will receive a 50% reduction on the statutory tuition fees and on the half-off tuition fees for the academic year 2021-2022. Institution tuition fees will be reduced by € 1,084.00 from the amount previously set for the 2021-2022 academic year. This does not apply to the 2022-2023 academic year.
