In the English taught International Finance & Control bachelor you learn how companies can improve their financial health and how they can grow internationally by decision-making based on information.

Your employer wants to set up a production facility in Taiwan. It is your task to calculate future revenues, production costs and the net present value of the project.

Or, your company wants to take over one of its competitors and it's your task to determine the value of this company.

As an international financial specialist, you know how to create profitability, take investment decisions, apply risk management and present a business or export plan.

You will acquire knowledge about finance, accounting and data management. You will work in small groups on international business assignments. Your lecturer is your coach. You will spend 6 to 18 months abroad for an internship or exchange. Upon graduation you will be granted the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Finance & Control (international) is taught in English and many fellow students and lecturers come from abroad. 'International' also means learning about matters like dealing or investing in foreign currencies and recognising and bridging cultural differences.

Finance & Control is also offered in Dutch.

Financial Controller

Financial controllers run the accounting function and are responsible for the company's books and records.

Management Accountant

Management Accountants perform analysis to assist management with investments, risk management, budgeting, planning, strategizing, and decision making.

Business Controller

Business Controllers provide the management of a company with input and advice aimed at making (strategic) decisions and optimizing the structure of the organization.

Financial Business Analyst

Financial Business Analysts analyse the business model and finances of an organisation and use their findings to advise for improving businesses budgeting, management, and overall operations.

Assistant Controller

Financial Business Analysts analyse the business model and finances of an organisation and use their findings to advise for improving businesses budgeting, management, and overall operations.

Junior Accountant

Junior accountants manage daily accounting and financial tasks.

Follow-up education

After your studies you can do a master's in the Netherlands or abroad, such as Accounting & Finance, Financial Economics, Urban, Port and Transport Economics, Health Economics, Marketing Management, Information Management or Financial Management. Or you can take a post-graduate MBA programme.

Programme structure

Study programme

The 4 years are divided into 4 quarters of 10 weeks each or in 2 semesters of 20 weeks each. You will spend the second semester of years 2, 3 and 4 on a company internship or study exchange at a partner university.

From day one, you will take on the different roles of financial business professionals, such as financial analyst, financial consultant or financial administrator, during project assignments. You apply the theory you learn in class directly in order to deliver a successful project.

Year 1

Foundation year

In the foundation year, you acquire the basic knowledge needed for your subsequent studies. The first year consists of 4 10-week blocks. In addition to the group project you work on, you attend classes. Courses are centred around finance, accounting, management accounting, corporate culture and international business. You take English classes and practise your digital skills. Every year you can obtain 60 ECTS credits. In the first year you must obtain 52 ECTS to be able to continue to year 2.

Year 2

In year 2 you will study at Avans physically during the first semester. You study the topics of risk management and master budget. You work on three projects together with your fellow students. In the second semester of year 2 you will do a 5-month work placement in an international organisation. This can be in the Netherlands or abroad, that is up to you.

Year 3

During the first semester of year 3 you will attend classes at Avans. Together with the year 4 students you run a project on International Merger and Acquisition and Strategic Risk Management. You study courses like operational auditing and strategic finance and control. In the second semester of year 3 you will study at a partner university for 5 months, your exchange. You can do this at Avans, another university in the Netherlands or abroad.

Year 4

In this year, you attend classes as Avans during the first semester. Together with the year 3 students, you work on three different projects and you follow classes in the field of Integrated Reporting, Data Management and Process Mining. At the end of year 4, you will individually carry out a graduation project in an international organisation, working on advice or improvement ideas. You are free to decide where you want to do your graduation project.

Specialisations

Studying at Avans offers you the opportunity to specialise. Some programmes require you to choose your major before you start. All study programmes give you the chance to follow a minor in year 3 or 4. This will help you broaden or deepen your knowledge. Below you find the majors and minors for this study programme. Minor International Finance

This minor covers topics like integrated reporting, financial management, data analytics and process mining.

In the International Finance programme you acquire in-depth knowledge of several challenging aspects that corporates are currently facing, like integrated reporting, financial management, data analytics and process mining.

Moreover, you will explore value creation of international operating companies from a broad perspective and learn to apply actual models to assess integrated reports on a strategic level.

Furthermore, by learning and applying up-to-date methods to visualize processes and use data, you zoom in on the operational processes and explore possible improvements which will contribute to the overall strategic goals of the company.

Prior education

The level of your prior education has to be equivalent to the Dutch havo, vwo or mbo 4 level. English must have been one of your courses. If your prior education is equivalent to the Dutch havo, you should have graduated in mathematics and accounting or economics. If we are not familiar with your foreign diploma, NUFFIC, the Dutch organisation for international recognition of diploma, will check the level for us.

Please note: the mentioned deadlines are advised deadlines. When you meet them you give Avans enough time to process your application and, if applicable, apply for a visa. The formal deadline for students with a non-Dutch diploma is 31 August. Applicants with a Dutch diploma must have applied by the 1st of May.
