How can we design the built environment to be energy-neutral and climate-resilient, but also promote the health and well-being of residents? This is the core challenge taken on by the Sustainable Built Environment research group.
The Netherlands faces significant challenges in housing. The government aims to speed up construction, but nitrogen pollution and limited land complicate this. Stricter environmental regulations and the goal of circular construction by 2050 add further complexity. At the same time, the changing population and diverse housing needs of vulnerable groups are reshaping demand. There's also pressure to improve the sustainability of existing housing without damaging biodiversity. These often conflicting priorities present a difficult set of challenges.
