In this exchange programme, you deepen your research skills by working on complex research questions within molecular biology and biotechnology. You apply knowledge and skills in the fields of population genetics of various organisms, CRISPR-Cas9, and NGS and real-time PCR analysis techniques.

You learn to critically evaluate existing protocols and adapt them purposefully to answer specific research questions in a reproducible manner. You independently conduct a designed experiment you designed; you process, analyse, and interpret the results obtained with attention to reliability and validity. By establishing connections between molecular biological processes, applied techniques, and theory, you develop an integrated understanding of the field.
In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge and skills in molecular biology and biotechnology, you conduct a substantial (15 ECTS) research project, commissioned by a partner from the work field. In this project, you apply what you have learned and use this to bring your research to the next level, as well as gaining excellent networking opportunities.
This exchange programme is taught exclusively in English.

Our current study programme follows a modular educational approach. This module comprises three intended learning outcomes that define the knowledge, skills, and competencies you are expected to achieve.
The weight of this exchange programme is 30 ECTS. 15 ECTS credits are reserved for the project in the R&D atelier (during the second half of the semester), and 15 ECTS credits are allocated to courses in both theoretical and practical foundation of molecular diagnostics and biotechnology.
You demonstrate in-depth and integrated knowledge of various laboratory techniques and underlying theories, including the population genetics of different organisms, NGS, real-time PCR, CRISPR-Cas9, and bioinformatics, and critically apply this knowledge to analyse and interpret complex case studies. You establish connections between different biological processes and techniques and substantiate choices and conclusions with relevant theoretical concepts and scientific insights.
In the context of a complex molecular biology/genetics research question, you critically review an existing protocol and adapt it in such a way that a specific research question can be answered reproducibly, while observing predetermined frameworks. You carefully carry out the designed experiment, and proces, analyse, and interpret the obtained results, as well as their reliability and validity. You justify and explain the choices made and the results found in an oral presentation based on your own lab journal.
You independently conduct practical research in which you translate a research question into concrete sub-questions and an appropriate experimental design. You plan and execute experiments and ensure the reproducibility of your results by accurately documenting the findings in the lab journal. You collaborate professionally with fellow students, lecturers, and the client, and stimulate your own development by actively seeking feedback, incorporating it, and critically reflecting on your learning process.
All learning outcomes should be completed successfully to gain 30 ECTS in this exchange programme. The final grade for each learning outcome (scale 1-10) will be obtained when the parts have been assessed as sufficient or marks are ≥ 5.5. All individual learning outcomes have to be scored ≥5.5 or pass, compensation with other learning outcomes is not possible.
