This programme is about developing a concept in visual storytelling. How do you come up with a captivating idea for a graphic novel, story book, TV series, or film? Or for something that works on all these platforms?

Whether it’s an ingenious story of your own, an engaging discourse, or an educational account, you will learn how to tell the heart of a story well, and convincingly. You will make it come to life and develop the idea into a professional pitch package.
This programme is part of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Design at St Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch and Breda.

You will work in a studio setting, you will form teams, you will create partnerships. Together with the other students in your team, you will conduct research and produce your work. Much of what you do as a team you will do autonomously. You will learn how to use each other’s qualities effectively. During the minor, you will twice form a team and twice work towards an end-result.
This minor offers you the opportunity to study still or animated images. You will take the first steps towards specialising in a particular field. Perhaps your talents lie in screenwriting or storyboarding. Or are you a character designer or world-builder? Are you interested in concept art, title design, panelling, illustration, or animation? Or is audio, colouring, editorial work, graphic design, art direction, making 3D models more your thing? Maybe you’re a real producer. You will have several opportunities to explore these areas in depth. Sometimes you will be changing roles within a production.
You will carry out research into the role you have chosen, the theme behind the story, the visual approach, the technical realisation, and into target groups, podiums and platforms. With each other, you will also reflect on the production.
The assessment procedure in Development for Animated Storytelling is an integral part of the process. In other words we look at everything, as a whole. At the end of the minor, you will be assessed on:
The final assessment takes into account the quality of your work, your research, and your class participation.
You will be invited to a progress meeting midway through the programme, at which you will receive feedback from your lecturers. You will hear whether you are on schedule and what you still need to do to achieve the final attainment level for the programme.
The components of the minor are assessed separately and are each awarded a number of ECTS. You are awarded the ECTS for the components if you receive a final grade of 5.5 or higher and provided any sub-component requirements have been met. You are assessed both individually and based on group work.
