Disruptive Events

This minor programme is framed around 2 modules comprising several courses of in total 30 ECTS. During the 2 modules you will learn to understand different types of events with a disruptive impact on society.

Track (Inter)national Disaster, Resilience and Migration

In the first module, you will focus on natural disasters and learn to respond, aiming to reduce the impact of natural disasters in both a developing and western context. During this module you will learn to work with innovative tools and design, test and evaluate solutions in real life cases.

In the second module, you will learn to understand the main European issues that have caused disruption in recent years: migration and migration-related issues. The courses you will be attending, are focused on governance and policy, migration ethics and radicalization and terrorism. Part of this module are two field trips: a 1 week field visit to Bosnia and Hercegovina and a short trip to Calais. During both trips you will do participative research.

During the entire minor programme you develop yourself as a professional in a disruptive event. At the end of the minor project all your work will be exhibited.

Module 1: Disaster Risk Reduction 15 ECTS

  • Crisis response coordination

  • System thinking in disaster resilience
  • Climate change impacts
  • Epidemic response and prevention (fieldwork in the Netherlands and Finland)

Module 2: Migration policy and practice 15 ECTS

  • Understanding migration dynamics, governance and policy
  • Ethics and migration
  • Participative research in a refugee / migrant camp
  • ​Preventing, detecting and responding to the violent extremist threat
  • Professional in a disruptive event

Track (Inter)national Disaster, resilience and Climate change

In the first module, you will focus on natural disasters and learn to respond, aiming to reduce the impact of natural disasters in both a developing and western context. During this module you will learn to work with innovative tools and design, test and evaluate solutions in real life cases.

In the second module, you will work on a project in a small team, based on a question from an actual client. We stimulate multidisciplinary groups, so you can learn with each other and from each other.  All of the project topics have in common that they are focused on environmental disasters that are happening now and can be monitored and recovered from due to human interference.

  • Forecasting global flood and drought risk using GIS
  • Analyzing environmental hazards and recovery

Objectives
