Avans at number 1 in the national rankings for the sixth time

According to students, Avans University of Applied Sciences is once again the top large university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. This was announced by the Keuzegids Hbo 2018 guide published today. Students are particularly satisfied about the quality of the lecturers and the atmosphere at Avans. Avans has been in the top 3 for the past 9 years and occupies the top position for the sixth time.

Keuzegids Hbo is one of the leading higher education guides in the Netherlands. Published annually, its aim is to help secondary school pupils choose the right study programme. The Keuzegids Hbo rankings are based on indicators including the results of the Dutch National Student Survey (NSS).

Avans also asked students to give their personal impression of Avans, which once again highlighted the positive experiences of students with the lecturers and the good atmosphere at the university of applied sciences. According to the students, 'The contact with lecturers is great: you can always send them an e-mail or an app and ask them questions’, and ‘You never feel like you're just a number'.

Proud of our lecturers and students

Paul Rüpp, President of the Avans Executive Board is pleased with the result, ‘While I can barely believe that we have achieved such exceptional results for so long, it is when you see the involvement and commitment shown by our staff that it becomes clear why we do so well. The interaction between students and lecturers is fantastic and that contributes to this university of applied sciences being such a close-knit community. It's a biotope with a great atmosphere that provides challenging education.’

‘And how did we achieve this? By excelling in small-scale functioning. Despite having 30,000 students, we have divided the university of applied sciences into small-scale units where our staff have a great deal of responsibility. This creates a connection with the students and is something that they really value. We are now further developing this independent organisation.’

Avans sets itself high standards

Avans is committed to scoring higher than 3.5 on a scale of 5 in all categories. This has nearly been achieved: the category of ‘challenging education’ has excelled, yet there are a few categories that are still trailing. However, Avans is working hard on improving these.

Internationalisation has also been placed high on the agenda. It is important to Avans that the study programmes incorporate the international context of the profession. Furthermore, every student has command of a second language at B2 level upon completing their study programme.

Number 1 rankings

27 of the 54 Avans study programmes are in the top 3 of their category. 11 of these study programmes are in first place, 7 study programmes are in second place. 9 occupy third place in their category rankings.
