Forensic professional Safety and Society

The components of the programme are assessed separately and each awarded a number of ECTS. You are awarded the ECTS for the components if you receive a final grade of 5.5 or higher and provided any sub-component requirements have been met. You are assessed both individually and based on group work. As part of this programme, you will complete modules worth 30 ECTS credits in total. Each module is 5 ects. You will follow different modules during the programme:

1. Concept of Safety

What is safety, or deviant behavior? What is the vision on yourself, others or the society regarding feeling safe? Different perspectives of safety (mental safety, physical safety e.d.) and different levels of safety are part of the module. What is safety on a personal, small group, community, society and digital level? How can you act on them? And how can you prevent situations in which people are or feel unsafe and maintain safety? 

2. Theoretical models

To understand the behavior of people different theoretical models will be used. You will learn to look at behavior from different theoretical perspectives, such as models explaining the process of radicalization and polarization and models on the development of deviant behavior, including criminal behavior,  psychiatry and addiction. You will also learn about the Good Lives Model, RNR model, recovery oriented working, rehabilitation models, intersectional working (identity), social and human capital, trauma-sensitive working and desistance theoretical frameworks. 

3. Law and legislation, including multi-professional and interventions/methodologies

If you act as a professional in the field of care, welfare or justice, it’s important to understand the framework you will work in. In this module the mental health law, criminal law, family law are part of the module. But also your professional position and the associated duties, rights and limits, as also the topic of privacy will be discussed. The effect and role of social media is included.

4. Multi-perspective view including risks and needs assessment

How do different professionals and other stakeholders look at the behavior of people? What are important norms and values and which emotions and coping strategies influence the view on people? How to understand image and stereotypes and how to be able to justify choices in guidance based on ethical thinking is part of this module. You will learn the perspectives of different stakeholders, such as clients, patients, experience experts, professionals and volunteers.

5. Crisis management

In this module you will learn about coping skills and how to act in a crisis within yourself, the other and the situation. You will learn how to deal with them all. Also the prevention of a crisis and the aftercare for clients, patients and professionals is included. And the topic of Second Victim. 

6. Working alliance, including communication and decision making

This module allows you to acquire skills, knowledge and values to develop a working alliance with the client or patient. Guidance and control must be combined, resulting in a so-called hybrid relationship. Apart from general considerations and training in this subject, the module allows you to tailor your skills to special offender groups, such as women offenders or offenders with psychiatric disorders. Frameworks such as motivational interviewing and recovery oriented working are included in this module.
